DTMF (Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency) allows VoiceStack to send or recognize keypad tones during a call. While DTMF is commonly used in Phone Trees (IVRs) to collect caller input, it can also be configured for External Numbers.
When an external number is configured with DTMF, VoiceStack automatically sends the specified digits after connecting the call. This is useful when forwarding calls to another phone system that requires keypad input to navigate menus or reach a specific extension.
How It Works in VoiceStack
- A call is routed to an External Number.
- VoiceStack connects to the destination number.
- The configured DTMF digits are automatically sent.
- The receiving system processes the digits and routes the call accordingly.
Example
A practice forwards calls to an answering service at (555) 123-4567. The answering service requires callers to press 2 for the medical team.
Instead of requiring callers to navigate the menu manually, VoiceStack can automatically send 2 after the call connects, directing the call to the correct department.
DTMF vs. Gather Digits
- Phone Tree (Gather Digits): Collects keypad input from the caller and uses it to determine the next action.
- External Number DTMF: Sends predefined keypad digits automatically after the call is connected to an external destination.
Common Use Cases
- Navigating third-party IVR systems.
- Reaching a specific extension automatically.
- Routing calls to answering services.
- Accessing external call centers or support lines.
- Automating call transfers to external phone systems.
