What is Pre-Queue Drop?
Pre-Queue Drop refers to a call being disconnected before it enters the call queue of a phone system. The call never reaches the agent or the waiting queue. It occurs when the incoming call is terminated during routing, before the system places it in the queue.
Difference between Pre-Queue Drop and Queue Drop
A Pre-Queue Drop occurs when a call is disconnected before it enters the queue. The caller never reaches the waiting stage. A Queue Drop occurs when a call is disconnected after it has entered the queue, while the caller is waiting to be connected to an agent.
Pre-Queue Drop:
- Call Initiated → Interactive Voice Response (IVR) / Initial Menu → Call Routing → ❌ Call Ends.
- Pre-Queue Drop indicates issues early in the call journey, before the system places the caller in line for an agent.
Queue Drop:
- Call Initiated → IVR / Initial Menu → Call Routing → Enters Queue → ❌ Call Ends.
- Queue Drop is a sign of friction during the waiting experience or delays in connecting to an agent.
How to View Pre-Queue Drops in VoiceStack
Admin App
1. Navigate to the side menu in the Admin App > Call Analytics.
2. Enable the Missed Breakdown toggle.
- You can view the breakdown of the missed calls. Pre-Queue Drop data can be seen in this list.
3. You can narrow down the results of Pre-Queue Drop using the filter tabs such as Calls by Location, Calls by Phone Number, Calls by Phone Tree, and Missed Call Response.
Agent App
1. Navigate to the Missed Calls section in the Agent App.
2. You can view the pre-queue drop from the Missed Status column in the table.
Reasons for Pre-Queue Drops
1. Caller disconnects early
- The caller hangs up while the system is still playing initial messages or setting up routing.
2. No available route / misconfiguration
- IVR option not configured
- Call routing rules fail
- Location/device offline
- Time-based routing mismatch.
3. System timeout
- If the system cannot find an agent or destination within a certain number of seconds, it drops the call before queuing.
4. Carrier failure
- Network glitch
- Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) carrier rejects or times out the call.
5. Blocked or flagged numbers
- Spam-filtered calls may be dropped before they hit the queue.
Pre-Queue Drops Impact on Patient Experience
They directly affect:
- Customer experience
- Call answer rate
- Call reporting accuracy
- Missed-call metrics.
A rising Pre-Queue Drop rate usually signals a system or routing issue, not just callers hanging up.
How to Reduce Pre-Queue Drops
- Avoid long initial greetings
- Ensure all IVR/menu options have valid routing paths
- Keep routing logic simple and fast
- Set fallback destinations (voicemail, backup agents, phone tree)
- Monitor carrier logs for failures
- Check device/agent availability rules.
